Consumer Reports' ratings are paywalled, so we don't quote its picks. We exclude manufacturer blogs, seller “tests” and sponsored videos from our expert counts.
Owner experience over time
Short tests can't show how a machine holds up after six months. So we read what owners report over time: about 1,600 posts and 2,700 comments in r/IceChewersAnonymous, plus retailer reviews (Best Buy, Amazon) and Trustpilot. We date every rating, because counts change and Amazon often pools ratings across model variants. We describe patterns and ranges; we don't publish “average lifespans”, because owner reports are self-selected.
Specs and safety
Specs come from manufacturer product pages and manuals, marked (mfr). When sources conflict (for example, rated output listed differently on a brand site and at a retailer), we show both. We check the CPSC recall database for every brand we recommend.
How we choose picks
- Expert consensus: how many independent tests recommend a machine, and for what.
- Measured performance: time to first ice, ice per hour, noise and power, where testers published them.
- Owner reliability evidence: failure patterns, warranty experience and repairability.
- Fit for a specific need: space, refills, budget, smart features or a water line.
Affiliate commissions don't decide picks. Several machines we recommend pay the same Amazon commission as the ones we skip, and we tell you to buy wherever returns are easiest.
Corrections
If you spot an error or a change (a new model, a recall, a warranty update), we want to know. We update the guide and the “Updated” date when we do.
