Frigidaire Countertop Ice Maker Warranty

Frigidaire countertop ice makers are made and serviced under licence by Curtis International. Here are the warranty terms from the manuals and how to make a claim.

By Scott Carswell · Updated · Facts checked 4 October 2026

Frigidaire countertop ice makers carry a 1-year limited warranty from the date of original purchase, per the Use and Care manuals for the EFIC256, EFIC255, EFIC228, EFIC117 and EFIC237. Claims go to Curtis International, the company that makes them under licence, at 1-800-968-9853 or by email. They do not go to Electrolux or the store.

You need the original receipt, the model and serial number, and photos of the unit. Curtis decides whether to repair, replace or refund. You pay to ship anything back. The details follow.

Who backs a Frigidaire countertop ice maker

Frigidaire's big appliances are Electrolux products. Its countertop ice makers are not. Curtis International Ltd., based in Mississauga, Ontario, makes and services them. The Curtis Frigidaire site states that "FRIGIDAIRE is a pending or registered trademark of Electrolux Consumer Products Inc." and that Curtis uses it under license. Older manuals name Electrolux Home Products as the licensor. Every manual we read sends service and warranty calls to Curtis.

So the warranty that matters is the one printed in your manual. A Frigidaire refrigerator or range warranty does not apply.

The term can vary by product. The Curtis FAQ mentions units covered for 1 year and others for 90 days, and says to check your manual. Every countertop ice maker manual we could open says 1 year. If your model is not in the table, read the warranty page of your own manual.

What the warranty covers

The manuals use the same wording. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of original purchase. Your remedy is repair or replacement of the product or the faulty part, at Curtis's option. If the model is no longer available, Curtis may send a similar one of equal or greater value.

What it does not cover

  • Glass, filters and wear from normal use.
  • Use that does not follow the printed directions.
  • Damage from accident, alteration, abuse or misuse.
  • Any use other than single-family household use. Office or commercial use voids it.
  • Running the unit on the wrong voltage.
  • Physical damage. Curtis says this is not a defect. If the unit arrives damaged, return it to the store.
  • Liquids other than water. The EFIC228 manual warns that beverages may void the warranty.

Who it covers

The warranty covers the original buyer or a gift recipient only. It does not pass to a second owner. Curtis also disclaims incidental and consequential damages and limits liability to the purchase price, as far as state law allows.

Proof of purchase

A receipt is required. Curtis's FAQ is blunt: if you lost your receipt, you cannot file a claim. Curtis uses it to confirm the purchase date and that the seller is a reputable dealer. If you bought online, download the receipt from your account. Many stores can reprint one. If the unit was a gift, ask the giver for a copy.

The warranty starts on the purchase date, not the day you open the box. Curtis advises testing a new unit right away, even one bought as a gift.

How to make a claim

  1. Find the model and serial number on the back of the unit.
  2. Contact Curtis. Use the warranty web form on the Frigidaire product support page, email support2@curtiscs.com, or call 1-800-968-9853. The support page lists hours of 8 a.m. to midnight Eastern, 7 days a week.
  3. Send clear photos of the bill of sale (purchase date and store name), the front and back of the unit, the model and serial label, and the fault if you can. Include your full name, address and phone number.
  4. You get a case file number (CF number). Curtis says the warranty team emails next steps within 48 business hours.
  5. Wait for a decision. Curtis says a full review can take up to 20 business days.

If Curtis approves the claim, it offers one of three outcomes at its discretion: repair or replace the part, replace the unit with one of equal or greater value, or refund the purchase price. Curtis says "All decisions are final" and closes the file if you refuse the offer. The manuals add that you pay all costs to return the product. Before a replacement ships, the old unit must be returned or made inoperable.

You can also write to Curtis International Ltd., 7045 Beckett Drive, Unit 15, Mississauga, Ontario L5S 2A3, Canada, Attn: Customer Service. Include your CF number, or the request may be rejected (Curtis contact page).

Store returns vs the warranty

A store return is often faster than a warranty claim. Some Curtis manuals say "do not return this product to the store" for warranty claims. That line governs the warranty process. It does not cancel the store's own return policy, which runs on its own clock.

  • Costco: its return policy guarantees satisfaction on most products. The 90-day limit applies to listed categories such as TVs, computers and major appliances. Its major appliance list names refrigerators over 10 cubic feet, freezers, ranges, dishwashers, washers and dryers. It does not name countertop ice makers. Confirm at your warehouse.
  • Other stores: windows differ by retailer and can be short. Check the window on your receipt and note the date.

Owners in r/Costco describe returning failed units at the warehouse instead of claiming with Curtis. One wrote that theirs "lasted about 3 weeks and broke. Returned" (r/Costco, Aug 2024).

Extended protection plans

Retailers sell protection plans at checkout. These are separate contracts from the Curtis warranty and are usually run by a third-party plan provider. Owners in r/IceChewersAnonymous often recommend them for nugget ice makers because many units fail in year one or two. Before you buy one, check:

  • whether it starts after the 1-year Curtis warranty or runs alongside it;
  • who pays shipping or pickup;
  • whether you get a repair, a replacement or a refund;
  • how many claims are allowed.

What owners report

Written accounts of Curtis warranty claims are scarce. What we did find, as of 4 October 2026:

  • Early failures are common. One owner reported two Frigidaire units in a row "dying around 11 months each time" (r/IceChewersAnonymous, Nov 2025). That is just inside a 1-year warranty.
  • Others report longer life. One owner switched to a Frigidaire after an Opal died at 2.5 years and is happy with it (Nov 2025).
  • Two large r/Costco threads on the Frigidaire nugget machine (250 comments and 301 comments) focus on returns, noise and mold more than on warranty claims.
  • The BBB profile for Curtis International shows it as not rated and not accredited, with 318 closed complaints in the last 3 years. That figure covers all Curtis products, including TVs, not only ice makers.

The common friction points come from the terms themselves: a lost receipt ends the claim, you pay return shipping, and Curtis chooses the remedy.

Before you claim: quick checks

  • Check the water level and that the reservoir is seated.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and descale. Scale causes many "not making ice" faults. See our care guide.
  • Check the room temperature. Curtis lists an operating range of 50 to 104 F for the EFIC256.
  • Many budget nugget machines share parts. Our not making ice guide covers the same faults.

To lower the odds of needing a claim, read our reliability notes and whether to leave it on all the time. Comparing machines? See our Frigidaire Gallery notes and the best countertop nugget ice makers.
