GE Opal cleaning light flashing: what it means and how to clear it

Each Opal model uses different cleaning lights. Find yours, then follow GE's own sanitize and descale steps to clear it.

By Scott Carswell · Updated · Facts checked 4 October 2026

On most Opals, a flashing or lit cleaning light means the machine is either asking for maintenance or is in the middle of a clean cycle. What it means, and how you clear it, depends on which Opal you own. The Opal 1.0, 2.0, 2.0 Ultra and Opal Mini all use different lights.

Find your model in the table, then follow the matching steps below. Every step here comes from GE's manuals or support pages. Where GE doesn't document something, we say so.

Opal 1.0: yellow ring

A yellow ring means the Opal is in cleaning mode. To go back to making ice, slide the switch on the back to ICE, per GE's not-making-ice article. If it still won't make ice, GE's yellow-ring article says to run it in ice mode for 10 minutes and feel whether warm air comes out. If it does and the machine made good ice before, GE points you to the descaling steps. To clean it, GE's round-button cleaning guide gives this sequence:

  1. Unplug the Opal. Remove the water filter, if fitted, and put back the screened intake cap.
  2. Drain the unit.
  3. Plug it in and slide the rear switch to Clean.
  4. Mix five cups of hot water (100 to 120°F) with one teaspoon of household bleach and pour it into the reservoir.
  5. Touch the front button to start the three-minute cycle.
  6. Drain, then rinse with five cups of fresh water. Rinse three times in total.
  7. Slide the rear switch back to Ice.

To descale, GE says to fill the reservoir with hot white vinegar to the max fill line, run up to three cleaning cycles, leave the vinegar in for 18 hours, clean the sensors with vinegar, then run three fresh-water rinses.

Opal 2.0: the Cleaning indicator

On the Opal 2.0, "Cleaning" is a status light. It comes on when a clean cycle starts and goes off when the cycle ends. GE's manual doesn't describe a reminder light or a flashing state for this model. If the light stays on, the manual says you can exit a cleaning cycle at any time by holding Clean for 3 seconds. GE recommends sanitizing once a week. The manual's sequence:

  1. Unplug the Opal. Remove the water filter, if fitted, and fit the screened intake cap.
  2. Drain the Opal using the drain hoses at the back.
  3. Mix five cups of water with one teaspoon of household bleach and pour it in up to the fill line.
  4. Plug in the Opal and hold Clean for 3 seconds. Water circulates for about three minutes, then the Cleaning light turns off.
  5. Unhook the drain hoses, lay them in a sink or bucket below the unit, remove the plugs and let it drain. Refit the plugs.
  6. Add five cups of fresh water and press Clean to rinse. Drain again.
  7. Repeat the rinse two more times, refit the drain tubes, fill with fresh water and press Power.

For mineral scale, the manual uses white vinegar to the max fill line, up to three cleaning cycles, an 18-hour soak with a vinegar-soaked towel on the ice chute overnight, and a vinegar wipe of the sensors before three rinses. The manual also links squeaking to scale: "More frequent squeaking usually requires white vinegar cleaning." During a defrost, which can take 30 to 45 minutes, the front buttons won't respond.

Opal 2.0 Ultra: Sanitize and Descale lights

The Ultra splits the reminder in two. GE's launch announcement calls this "Enhanced UI Notifications" that distinguish sanitizing from descaling. Per the manual, sanitize once a week and descale every 2 to 3 weeks, depending on water hardness. The procedure we read (manual 49-9000222 Rev. 4):

  1. Unplug the Opal. Remove the water filter and fit the screened intake cap. Drain the unit.
  2. To sanitize, fill with water to the Max Fill line and add one teaspoon of bleach. To descale, fill with white vinegar to the Max Fill line, or use the Opal Cleaning Kit and its instructions.
  3. Plug in and hold Clean for 3 seconds. The cycle runs about three minutes.
  4. For sanitizing, drain promptly once the Cleaning light turns off. For descaling, run the cycle up to three times, then let it soak for 18 hours. Wipe the inner walls with a cloth dipped in the solution, use a cotton swab on cracks, and clean the sensors with vinegar.
  5. Drain, then rinse with five cups of fresh water and a clean cycle. Repeat for three rinses in total.
  6. Refit the drain tubes, fill with fresh water and press Power.

The Ultra also has a rear air filter that GE says to check and clean at least every 2 months. The manual we read says when the lights turn on, but doesn't describe a separate reset step. If a light stays on after a full cycle, check the manual revision that came with your unit or the SmartHQ app, or call Opal Support. We won't guess at a button combination.

Opal Mini: the Clean button light

The Mini uses a different routine with GE's own citric acid descaler. Per its manual, a flashing Clean light just means a cycle is running. A steady light asks for a descale. A slow pulse asks for a rinse. GE recommends descaling once a month, depending on water hardness, and hand-cleaning the upper reservoir every 3 months or at each filter change.

  1. Unplug the Opal and drain it. Remove the front lower panel to reach the drain tube. Disconnect the side tank if you have one.
  2. When it has drained, put the plug back in the tube. The manual's filter section says to remove installed filters before descaling. The water diverter goes back in where the filter sat.
  3. Add one packet of Opal Citric Acid Powder Descaler to a full inner reservoir of hot water. GE warns that tap water above 125°F can scald.
  4. Plug in and hold Clean to start the 55-minute descale cycle.
  5. Drain, reconnect the tube and fill the inner reservoir with fresh water.
  6. Tap Clean to start a 3-minute rinse. Drain and refill. GE recommends three rinses in total.
  7. Reconnect the drain tube and the side tank tube. The Mini is ready to make ice.

The Mini's Filter light is separate. It goes steady when the filter is expired. Hold Filter for 3 seconds to reset filter tracking. The light flashes twice to confirm.

Descale schedule by water hardness

For Opals without a round button, GE's cleaning guide sets descaling by hardness: every 2 to 4 months at 0 to 4 grains per gallon, every 1 to 2 months at 4 to 7, every 3 to 4 weeks at 7 to 10, and every 2 to 3 weeks above 10. In our review of owner discussions, people on filtered tap or hard water report descaling every 2 to 4 weeks. Owners on distilled water report 1 to 6 months between descales. Both match GE's table.

If the light won't clear

  • Make sure you ran the full sequence, including the rinses, for your model.
  • Check that the reservoir has water. GE says Add Water blocks both ice making and cleaning.
  • If the Opal also shows Add Water with a full tank, see our Add Water fix guide.
  • Call Opal Support at 1-866-907-6718 or myopalservice.com, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern.

Some older guides suggest lifting a feeler arm three times or holding Clean for 3 seconds to reset the reminder. None of GE's Opal manuals mention a feeler arm. On the 2.0 and Ultra, holding Clean for 3 seconds starts or stops a cycle; GE doesn't describe it as a reset. More on upkeep is in our care section, and model comparisons start with the Opal 2.0 Ultra and Opal Mini.

Questions

Why is my Opal cleaning light flashing?

On the Opal Mini, a flashing Clean light means a cycle is running. On the Opal 1.0, a yellow ring means the unit is in cleaning mode; slide the rear switch to ICE to make ice again.

How do I reset the Opal 2.0 Ultra descale light?

Run the full descale procedure from your manual. The Ultra manual we read doesn't list a separate reset step. If the light stays on, check the SmartHQ app or call Opal Support.

How often should I descale my Opal?

It depends on water hardness. GE's schedule ranges from every 2 to 4 months for soft water to every 2 to 3 weeks above 10 grains per gallon. The Opal Mini manual says once a month.

Can I use vinegar to descale an Opal?

Yes on the Opal 1.0, 2.0 and 2.0 Ultra, per GE. The Opal Mini manual uses GE's citric acid descaler packet instead.

Should I use soap to clean the reservoir?

No. GE's manuals say not to use soap in the water reservoir. Use the bleach or vinegar solutions GE gives, and rinse well.
